How to Control Your Bathroom Remodeling Budget

A bathroom remodel can easily go over budget if one doesn’t keep a close eye on it. Poor budget management can lead to changes that result in overspending, an unfinished project, or making compromises to keep the project within budget. In today’s post, Envy Home Services shares a quick guide on how to control your bathroom remodeling budget.

Keep Your Plans Realistic

Start your remodeling plans with a realistic understanding of what your budget can achieve. Everyone wants the best fixtures and the most luxurious features, but they can add up, especially when you factor in labor and potential changes to the structure. A good remodeling plan should start at covering your needs, as well as addressing problems that need to be fixed. Problematic fixture placement, plumbing issues and safety hazards should be addressed and incorporated into your plans well before you pick the toilet, bathtub and cabinetry.

Stick to the Plan

One of the most common reasons why remodeling projects go off the rails is because of changes made halfway through the project. For example, a client might change their mind about the tile color or pattern, or maybe they find out late that they wanted a different style after all. To use an expression, changing your horses mid-stream will set the project back because new plans will need to be drawn and new materials will need to be ordered. Already-installed materials will have to be stripped. Fortunately, all of this can be avoided by making sure that you’re satisfied with the plan. If you’re more of a visual person, you can work with your remodeler in creating visual aids that illustrate the finished bathroom.

Have a Contingency Budget

Your remodeler may find hidden problems that will need to be fixed before the project can continue. The existing plumbing may need to be replaced or rerouted, or they may find mold or structural problems that have to be fixed. Be prepared for such situations by keeping a budget headroom worth up to 20% of the estimated project cost. You probably won’t end up using it, but having a budget for such contingencies will give you the peace of mind that your project won’t go off the rails.
