5 Bathroom Safety Tips for Older Adults

An accessible bathroom allows you to accommodate the needs of young children, older family members and loved ones with limited mobility. To ensure they can comfortably and safely use this room, make sure to follow these five essential tips.

1.  Illuminate the Area

Bathrooms are an accident-prone area, especially if they’re not properly illuminated. Take extra care in choosing your lighting fixtures, and make sure they are placed in a safe, strategic area. Your remodeler can help you identify the best placement for your bathroom lights.

2. Install Handlebars

Place grab bars in or near the bathtub, toilet and shower area. These will give your loved ones something to grab onto for stability or in case they lose their footing.

3. Store Chemicals and Cleaning Materials Properly

It would be dangerous to place chemicals anywhere. Put hazardous chemicals used for bathroom cleaning in a cabinet to avoid accidents. Organize other bathroom cleaning supplies to keep the room safe and clutter-free.

4. Put Electrical Devices Away

Always put away your curling iron, electric razor and hair dryer after use. You can also use waterproof materials to protect these items or place them in a dry location. Make a floating shelf or cabinet for these items and keep them away from the water.

5. Use Slip-Resistant Mats

The most common accidents in the bathroom are slips and falls. Place slip-resistant mats with rubber backing on the floor to prevent these unfortunate incidents. A suction cup-backed mat is also ideal so you can avoid slipping in the shower.
